WHAT'S IN A NAME?
One thing for sure is that Cox and its many variations is not that easy to define and over the years has become quite widespread. Recent years has produced the thought that its origin appertains to scullions and the like; a pert boy; a common friend or pal, although I think it may have been more meaningful than that but any proof has been lost in the mists of time.
I have been researching this subject since 1959, mainly in Somerset but have increased the scope of my research to the UK. I have collected references from a great many sources including donations from like researchers that are of great value and have proved their worth by making that all-important connection in several cases.
The IGIs, Census and Parish Records are probably the main stay of my collection and now that the 1901 census is searchable on line I have been able to make connections and sense out of some of the puzzles. I do not make my records available for the personal search by anyone but I will provide information if it is possible to any enquirer or researcher of their Cox family if the connection is proved or likely.
My records are mostly from the 19th century going back to 17th – 18th century, some are from before that time and some continue into this century; some families link with those overseas. Information will not be provided unless a relationship is evident.
My main site is http://www.cox-ukresearch.co.uk where I have displayed a variety of Genealogical items including my thoughts on the name’s origin. I am also very interested in the local history of what I term The Brents, the history being steeped in fascinating facts of life, mystery and imagination. Some of the greatest have sought out Somerset and left their mark, but being a Somerset lad is something to be proud of despite the difficulties of the past.
I look forward to all enquiries and to being able to assist if I can with the mutual exchange of Cox information both Genealogical and Historical.

My father's brothers and sisters are/were:

LOOKING FOR THE ELMES FAMILY
I'm trying to find a family that lived in Dorset in 1905, it's quite possible the family moved around.
Edward Elmes and his wife Cecile had approx 13 children. Edward was a Petty Officer in the RN. The youngest of their children Arthur, was my father-in-law. He was sent to Australia in 1911 as a Child Migrant and never heard from his family again.
He spent 65 years until his death, searching for them. Arthurs' family in Australia would like to contact any remaining relatives. It is also possible they (the relatives) were told he had been adopted or had died.
Could everyone please ask an elder family member if they knew or had heard of the family, it may just jog someones memory.
Thank you in advance

LOOKING FOR ANY GODWIN'S OR SAUNDERS'
I am looking for any Godwins or Saunders in the Somerset area who may be related.
My great grandfather was named Egdar Godwin (born 1871) and was the son of Thomas Godwin and Emily (Howe) Godwin. They lived in the Shapwick area. Edgar was married to Mabel Ellen Saunders in 1894 in St. Mary's Church in Shapwick.
Edgar and Mabel moved to Rockefeller, Illinois (The town is now called Mundelein) around that time. Edgar and Mabel had twelve children.
Edgar and Mabel have a large number of descendents throughout the United States.
Please email me at KCGodwin70@msn.com if you believe that you are related to Edgar or Mabel. I am interested in reestablishing contact with any and all of my English cousins as well as learning about our family and ancestors.
Thank you very much,
Ken Godwin

LOOKING FOR ALLERCOTTS
I am an Allercott whose family came from Taunton, Somerset, England. I am from Canada. I have been able to go as far back as George Allercott born in 1805 in Miller West Monkton, Somerset. His son Robert Allercott was born in 1844 in Ash Priors, Somerset. And his son (my great grandfather) was Francis Henry Allercott Mar 10, 1885 born in Taunton, Somerset (I believe). Francis had several brothers and sisters - said to be 14-15 siblings. So I am sure I probably have Allercott relations still in Somerset!
Thank you for taking time to read my request. It is very deeply appreciated! Please email me at
rhondaallercott@hotmail.com with any response.

WICKENDENS
I am looking for any information about the Wickenden family or their business called "Wickenden's". The confectionery store and catering and restaurant business operated in Wells from approximately 1870 to 1891 when my family moved to Canada. Started by Frederick Wickenden, it was taken over by his brother William Henry Wickenden (my great grandfather) in 1880. I have found the info in the census of 1881 and 1891 but would like any information about the business....or WHY the family went to Canada. Any photos anyone has of individuals or the business would be greatly appreciated. Contact me at gordwick@ripnet.com or at 4 Cohen Ave, Kanata, Ontario, Canada, K2L 4E9
